Who's been tuning in to this season of American Idol? Ryan, Randy, Steven and I traveled across the country to some new cities and held auditions for hundreds of contestants. Check back for behind-the-scenes access this season.

In every city where auditions are held, we had a great time with these amazingly talented people and became more comfortable together as judges. I know I’m more at ease in my role, but I’m still emotional – as you can tell just by watching. We’re trying to give the best advice we can to these young people, to help encourage them to grow.

A lot of people ask me what I’m looking for when I’m judging an Idol contestant and I’d have to say an amazing voice more than anything. Maybe they lack something – confidence, style, or their technique could be improved – but they’ve got to start with great pipes. They’re young, so I don’t expect them to have the experience, which is why we try to give them guidance. Sometimes we have to be a little critical, but it’s all done with love. In the end, receiving feedback is the only way to grow, and if you’re pursuing a dream – any dream – you have to be open to the opinion and suggestions of others.
